FUNimation has announced that it is going to be discontinuing their DTO (Download To Own) program as of August 20th this month, which is the last day that any redemption can be made against past purchase for download. FUNimation was one of the few companies to attempt this format over the last few years and had some early success with series like Black Blood Brothers, but as most anyone who reads this will think, it’s not been promoted hardly at all ever since and most people are hard pressed to even figure out where it may have been on the old site, never mind the new site. The service was one of those that had potential at the start, but likely ran into numerous licensing issues and/or found an easier time working through services such as iTunes instead.
FUNimation.com will be discontinuing its download-to-own video service at the end of this month, and users have until August 20th to redeem and download any past purchases. Existing DTO purchases should continue to play without issue. However, if a user removes or transfers those files, the user will not receive a new license for those videos and they may not continue to play. If you experience any issues, you can e-mail [email protected] until August 30th.
